Dutch artist Thijs ten Brummelhuis (b. 1986) paints and draws compositions that move between the recognisable and the imaginary. Drawing on elements of landscape and spatial environments, he builds his images through an expressive, dynamic process. Working across different scales, the large works invite immersion, while the smaller ones create an intimate, at times unsettling encounter. Rather than depicting specific places, the work explores the idea of landscape as a structure rather than a location.
Born in 1986 in Hengelo, the Netherlands, Thijs ten Brummelhuis studied Architecture at TU Delft and ETH Zurich, where he began painting alongside his studies. He subsequently worked as an architect in several European cities, focusing primarily on the transformation of existing buildings, while also teaching architectural design in Amsterdam and at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Throughout these years, he continued to develop his painting practice in studios in Berlin and later The Hague. Initially working in a largely figurative manner, his paintings gradually evolved into the suggestive, expressive works he creates today. Thijs now lives and works between Valencia and Hengelo.
